Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
