No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
