Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the flight, including spotlight on her women's health research and platforms for her activism.
